Guatemala Hiking Itinerary
On Day 1, arrive in Antigua, Guatemala, a city rich with colonial history and surrounded by volcanoes. Spend the day exploring its colourful streets, bustling markets, and vibrant plazas before joining the group for a welcome dinner. Get to know your fellow adventurers while sampling local dishes like pepian, a traditional Guatemalan stew.
On Day 2, begin your adventure with a guided walking tour through Antigua’s historic streets, visiting grand churches, hidden courtyards, and lively town squares. You’ll also explore the surrounding neighbourhoods, learning about Guatemala’s deep-rooted culture, traditions and rich heritage that this UNESCO World Heritage Site preserves. The afternoon is free for you to wander, shop for handicrafts, or indulge in the famous local chocolate.

Day 3 takes you on a scenic journey to Lake Atitlán, one of the most stunning destinations in Central America. Upon arrival, board a boat to San Juan La Laguna, a peaceful town known for its thriving arts scene and authentic Mayan culture. After a guided orientation walk, continue to the lakeside village of San Pedro, where you’ll have the evening free to relax and soak in the beauty of the lake.
On Day 4, rise early for an exhilarating trek up San Pedro Volcano. Accompanied by local guides, the hike offers stunning views of Lake Atitlán and the surrounding volcanic landscape. After the rewarding summit, descend back to San Pedro and enjoy a well-earned lunch before spending the afternoon at leisure, unwinding by the lake, trying some water sports or exploring the town’s lively cafes and artisan markets.
On Day 5, continue your journey with a morning hike up Rostro Maya, also known as the Mayan Face. This lesser-known trek offers breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and its volcanic surroundings. Afterward, depart for Xela, stopping en route at the colourful town of San Andrés Xecul, famous for its striking yellow church adorned with intricate indigenous designs.

Day 6 starts with an early morning 4×4 drive up to Chicabal Lagoon, a sacred volcanic crater lake revered by the local Maya Mam community. Enjoy a peaceful hike around the lake, soaking in the spiritual atmosphere before heading to Aguas Georginas, a serene natural hot spring nestled in the cloud forest. Relax in the rejuvenating thermal waters before returning to Xela for the evening.
On Day 7, travel to Pacaya Volcano, one of Guatemala’s most active volcanoes. After a hearty lunch in San Vicente Pacaya, set off on a guided hike, reaching the Central Volcanic Range viewpoint before continuing to Cerro Chino. Experience the surreal landscape of petrified lava fields and roast marshmallows over old volcanic hotspots before descending back to Antigua for a well-deserved rest.

On Day 8, you’ll take on one of the most challenging, rewarding and iconic hikes of the trip—an overnight trek up Acatenango Volcano. This high-altitude climb takes you through diverse ecosystems, from lush farmland to alpine forests, before reaching the base camp in the afternoon. As the sun sets, witness the mesmerising eruptions of nearby Volcán de Fuego, a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
On Day 9, start your morning with a final ascent to Acatenango’s summit for an unforgettable sunrise. From nearly 4,000 meters above sea level, take in panoramic views of the surrounding volcanoes and highlands before beginning your descent. Return to Antigua in the afternoon for a well-earned rest before concluding the adventure with a celebratory farewell dinner.
On Day 10, enjoy a final breakfast in Antigua before transferring to the airport for your departure, reflecting on the incredible landscapes and cultural experiences that made this journey truly unique.
